PHYSIOTHERAPHY

The Wellness Seminar Series organised by the We School and Nina Foundation held its 3rd informative session titled “Physiotherapy” on Saturday, March 21st 2009.
The Seminar was held in 3 parts
The 1st session  :  Rehabilitation of Paraplegics by Dr. V. C. Jacob
The 2nd session :  Clinical Examination of Spinal Cord Injuries by Dr. Milka Vivek
The 3rd session : Live demonstration of various excercises, lifting techniques, etc.

 

Attendees:  WE School Academic Dean Professor S. R. Tendulkar, faculty, students, Prof Dr. Ms Ketna Mehta, Dr. V. C.Jacob, Dr. Dhruv Mehta, Dr. Milka Vivek and Chief Guest Dr. Himanshu Doshi, Trustees, Members and Guests of the Nina Foundation, Members from Paraplegic Foundation, Cheshire Home and Sharan.

The event started with the hosts Abhinay Vishnoi & Amrita Nayate welcoming the guests. They also updated the audience by providing a brief recap about the previous 2 Wellness seminars. The entire event was managed by a team of 25 enthusiastic PGDM students.

The speakers of the evening, were introduced and felicitated by WE School academic dean Prof Tendulkar. Prof Tendulkar was then invited to address the audience. He spoke about WE School, its various courses and international internships and also highlighted the importance of undertaking social and healthcare initiatives.

Following this address, Ms. Ketna Mehta, Founder of Nina Foundation, educated the audience on the various activities and initiatives of Nina Foundation. An audiovisual was shown about the activities and future projects of Nina Foundation.

The stage was then taken over by the 1st speaker of the evening Dr V.C Jacob, a Renowned Physiotherapist, credited of having rehabilitated the maximum number of people with spinal cord injury in India, retd head of PT sion hospital and also the official PT of indian cricket team to Pakistan.
His presentation “Rehabilitation of Paraplegics” highlighted the Journey of Paraplegia - Past Present and Future. The various developments in treatments and the social shift in understanding paraplegia over the years was discussed
He also spoke about the changing role of physiotherapists and how rehabilitation and workshops emerged greatly benefiting paraplegic patients.

In the present context, he discussed the multidisciplinary Approach to treatment, various preventive and restorative measures, managing psychological problems etc. He concluded by highlighting how Group Therapy and Sports are emerging as forms of treatment.

This was followed by a Q&A session where Dr Jacob answered the queries of the audience patiently and in depth

The hosts then invited Dr Milka Vivek for the 2nd session titled “Clinical Examination of Spinal Cord Injuries”. she began by explaining the anatomy of the nervous system, the various cranial nerves and their functions. she also educated the audience about muscle power testing/grading  and various forms of muscle reflexes of the neck, shoulder, knee, hip, ankle joints etc.

The importance of exercises and various recommended activities such as strength training, wheel chair push ups, sports etc were also discussed. She also made it interactive by inviting two volunteers to drink water from bottles with a straw. Showing our lung power. Balloons were also distributed for judging the same capacity. Males have more lung power, it was confirmed.

This was follwed by the 3rd session by dr dhruv mehta , PT from Children orthopaedic hospital, and he made it interactive and followed the principle of ‘learning by doing’ All the members were asked to form a circle and with whatever mobility each had ball was passed around. A few quadriplegics used their chins to pass the ball and it was highly cheered by all.The rest of the session was dedicated to live demonstration of exercises and games with enthusiastic participation of the audience. Lifting techniques to take care of the backs of caregivers, strengthening of stomach muscles, balancing on wheelchair,  ways of transfers, coming up from the floor and vice versa were all demonstrated by members themselves.

The session concluded with Dr Himanshu Doshi, Trustee , Nina Foundation  giving Dr VC Jacob, dr dhruv mehta  and Dr Milka Vivek a token of appreciation on behalf of both Welingkar and Nina Foundation. The session was very informative and was well appreciated by the audience. This was followed by refreshments in the we school canteen.
Total participants including students 100.

2. a brief sneak peek was given about the earlier 2 seminars held on campus
3. the speakers, prof. tendulkar introduced.
4. prof. tendulkar spoke about we school and importance of such initiatives
5. program proceeds...with the mc introducing the first (main) speaker for the day - DR. JACOB, a physiotherapist
6. dr. jacob gave a presentation on the same and also explained the road till now(past), present and future
7. dr. milka vivek took over for explaining diff. types of muscular and therapeutic problems which surface and their treatment
8. the rest of the session was dedicated to live demonstration of exercises and games for making the effect felt along with conveying the necessary meaning / motive.
9. day concludes with felicitation of all the guest speakers, mr. mehta (guest for the evening), student volunteer group.
10. seminar closed followed by snacks & tea along with birthday celebrations of few participants
