The NINA Foundation successfully completed its 4th Seminar of Wellness Seminar Series for people with Spinal Cord Injury which began its journey on 13th December 2008. This seminar titled 'Skin Care” dealt with creating awareness on how to deal with bed sores and pressure sores especially for people with spinal cord injuries.

The event began with narration of few poetic lines in Hindi & English by the hosts for the evening Amrita Nayate & Vikas Kumar resp. Dr. S. N. Sagade, a renowned consultant Urologist of the PD Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai & also a trustee of Nina Foundation welcomed Mrs. Mehr Rampal, Dr. Uday Khopkar, Dr. Bimal Mody by giving them bamboo plants.

This seminar was marked by the announcement of completion of PhD by Dr. Ketna Mehta on “market potential study for a world-class spinal injury Rehabilitation centre in Mumbai.” This is for the first time in India that someone has done a PhD on this subject.

Dr. Ketna Mehta (both a faculty at Welingkar and founder trustee of Nina Foundation) then addressed the audience about the details of her study and the inspiration behind it. She briefed about the upcoming events by Nina Foundation. She talked about the Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day which was held on 25th June 2009.

Dr. Ketna Mehta then invited Mrs. Mehr Jessia Rampal to inaugurate the special edition of ‘One World Voice of Paraplegics’ which was followed by a video clip of the dance performance by people with spinal injury on The Awareness Day.

Post which Mrs. Rampal awarded certificates to We School Students’ Team for being an integral part of Wellness Seminar Series & for their constant support, as a token of appreciation.

Dr. Uday Khopkar then took charge beginning his lecture on different kinds of Bed Sores & Pressure sores. He began by explaining the reasons for bed sores and the different stages of bed sores. He also explained the various seating  postures on the wheel chair which helps in avoiding bed sores and pressure sores. He also showed the various exercises required for the same.
He concluded the session by speaking about the different kind of seats and cushions available to avoid bed sores.

Dr. Bimal Mody, a Plastic Surgeon then explained that  surgery needs to be done in case the bed sore has reached its third or fourth stage. He explained that a bed sore in its fourth stage may deepen up to the bones as well. Overall the session was very informative and was well appreciated by the audience.

Dr. Druv Mehta addressed the audiences about the innovative pressure relieving techniques as propagated by project Progemo in New Mexico.

There were exhibitors from POCL & Huntleigh who displayed various products related to curing and preventing bed sores. Mr. Chaurasia then presented the various new range of products like air mattresses and lifters with a video clip demonstrating their use.

This was followed by Q&A session where Dr. Sagade, Dr. Uday Khopkar & Dr. Bimal Modi attended to the queries of the audience very patiently and in depth. The various questions addressed were on sitting postures, about regular check up for bed sores, usage of catheters, etc.

A set of enthusiastic students of the new batch volunteered for Nina Foundation in this seminar along with the regular senior students to make this event a success.

The session ended with a vote of thanks by Saurabh and felicitation of Dr. Bimal Modi, Dr. Uday Khopkar, Dr. Dhruv Mehta and Mr. Chaurasia by Dr. Sagade.  This was followed by refreshments.
